As part of its objective to facilitate business and investment between the United States and Afghanistan, the Afghan-American Chamber of Commerce (AACC), in conjunction with the Afghanistan International Chamber of Commerce (AICC), is holding its annual U.S.-Afghan Business Matchmaking Conference 2006 on Oct. 29-31, at the Four Seasons Hotel in Washington, D.C.
AACC's president, chairman and staff will represent AACC and provide information. The president of AICC and chairman of the Afghan Business Council in Dubai will participate, along with member companies who are interested in exploring partnerships and joint ventures with U.S. companies. Representatives of major U.S. corporations, development organizations and government agencies will attend and have shown great interest in developing linkages with Afghan companies. The conference will be complemented by an informational trade fair, showcasing companies and organizations based in the U.S. and Afghanistan and resources available from U.S. government agencies and multilateral institutions such as the International Finance Corporation and the Multilateral Investment Guarantee Agency.
This event is the largest conference focused on bringing U.S. and Afghan companies together to discuss business and investment opportunities each year. Designed to highlight opportunities in Afghanistan's key sectors, including energy, mining, agribusiness and infrastructure, the conference will include presentations by key U.S. and Afghan officials and sector-focused roundtables to promote the sharing of information and ideas. Afghanistan's Minister of Commerce H.E. Mohammed Amin Farhang and U.S. Undersecretary of State for Political Affairs R. Nicolas Burns, will deliver remarks. The President of the Overseas Private Investment Corporation Robert Mosbacher Jr. will also participate to discuss OPIC's commitment to supporting U.S. investments in Afghanistan. The Vice President of the Afghanistan Investment Support Agency (AISA), Suleman Fatimie, and AISA support staff will travel from Afghanistan to provide information on opportunities and to answer questions regarding registration and licensing.
Five years after the fall of the Taliban, great progress has been made in developing Afghanistan's institutions and economy. Continued donor support is needed, but the private sector is the key to sustaining Afghanistan's recovery. Training and jobs are needed to provide alternatives to opium production and demobilization efforts. This will lead to greater security for the country and region.
